Education: The Great Equalizer

 

"Educated" blacksmith: The late K. Raghavan

When I was just 8 years old I went to Kottayam to stay the summer holidays with my maternal grandparents. 

Malayala Manorama was in the throes of being restarted after India obtained independence. A vindictive Dewan of Travancore, who had an aversion to Christians and anyone associated with the Indian freedom movement, had locked down the Malayala Manorama newspaper in 1938 and he had corrupted the justice system and imprisoned my grandfather on trumped up charges as he disliked journalists, (much like what is happening in India just today).

After coming out of prison and waiting for Indian Independence, K. C. Mammen Mappillai  restarted the newspaper.

He acquired a second hand rotary printing machine. There were no drawings or instructions, just packages containing all the parts of the press.

There was a young blacksmith who was also a car mechanic working for the newspaper. He used to repair the treadle presses when they broke down.

He had a small blacksmithery above the house kitchen where he would cast the lead letters for typesetting. As he allowed me to fan the fire with the bellows, I used to spend many hours with him.

One day, he was called by my grandfather who asked him whether he could put together a team of workers to set up the old rotary press. 

There was no hesitation from this young man, which spoke of great confidence.

He had no knowledge of engineering drawings, or any other training in any field of engineering.

He put together a group of similar youngsters and got to work. I watched, quite fascinated how he went about his work, opening each package and sorting  the parts one by one. 

Then they started putting the press together. Slowly the press started coming up, one side from the foundations and the other from the drive mechanisms. They worked feverishly and tirelessly, day and night, as it was a promise they made to my grandfather.

I went back to Bangalorc  and came back for our next  vacation. The press was almost ready and they wanted to start it up.

They considered me a mascot. Raghavan called me one afternoon and asked whether I would press the START button.

I pressed it but nothing happened. No one was disappointed. 

They got to work again and shortly I was asked to again perform the honours. 

This time this huge machine creaked and started to move to the cheers of the small group of workers.

Then it was a question of fine tuning and setting it up to run. Before my vacation was over, the machine was actually printing newspapers.

To my mind, that was the work of a highly educated individual, who in subsequent years earned the respect of printing engineers worldwide who came and set up the most complicated printing presses for the newspaper.  

The engineers held Raghavan in great awe.

Raghavan was not even permitted to retire by the newspaper and continued as an "Advisor".

This simple man, older to me by almost 9 years, always addressed me as “Sushilchayan” a term of respect in our Malayali system.

One day I will blog much more about this fascinating person.

Today there was a report in my INBOX that said that the country which was most educated was South Korea. Finland was ranked 29th  and India was near the bottom at 43rd out of 46 nations. 

The basis of judging this was by the number of people who had attained a tertiary degree.

South Korea has the highest percentage of educated persons.

In another recent report the best education system in the world is considered to be in Norway, followed by Finland, Singapore and South Korea.

I asked AI to prepare a short essay about its view on the best education systems.

Malayala Manorama launched its Manorama Year Book in 1959.


1984 Year Book which I brought to Finland with me and formed the basis of many lectures I gave about India.

The 2008 year book I recently gifted to a young Indian boy in Oulu who has a bent for curiosity.


Another year I gave the Year Book to a young Finnish girl in Oulu on her graduation. I was thanked profusely for it.


Many have asked me how I acquired such a broad General Knowledge. 


When the first edition of the Year Book was being prepared, my uncle, the Chief Editor of the Malayala Manorama, set up a offer where he offered me Rupee 1 for every mistake I could find in the Year Book. 


Rupee 1 was a huge sum those days for a 16 year old.


I meticulously read the Year Book, cover to cover, and earned a tidy sum! 


That proof reading exercise paid me well then and later in my personal and professional life.


I am not a very clever individual but certain key steps in my life have paid me lavishly!

My friend and hero, Raghavan, is my model of an educated human being. No South Korean, Norwegian, Finn or Singaporean, could hold a candle to my Raghavan!


Raghavan did not even have a basic education.

Is Finland the BEST country to LIVE IN?




Is Finland the best country in the world to live in?


That is what a recent Newsweek report said.

It is obvious that none of the Newsweek Team have never lived in Finland!

Finns are the “Masters of Spin”. The country is controlled by an oligarchy of about 50 powerful families (It used to be 5 but the base has widened slightly during the three decades.)

The Oligarchy control the Media. That is the most powerful weapon in the arsenal.

The judiciary, police, bureaucracy, lawyers, and politicians are primarily corrupt. The laws of the country are written to run such a system, so the word corruption does not exist in their little world.

How else can the proportional system of Government exist. In one election it may be a coalition of right and centre, while in the next it may be left and centre, while in the next it could be right and left! The promises made in any election campaign are just words for the masses to consume. The real wheeler dealing occurs in the chambers of power after the election where the poor are sacrificed at the expense of the rich!

The politicians do what the Oligarchy tells them. In the process they throw a few crumbs to the Finnish Public!

The schooling system is a joke in that the students are not permitted to question their teachers. This takes the student to adolescence where the Finnish male is forced into compulsory military service which makes them into zombies. (Exceptions do occur, but they are exceptions!)

To not take part in the army service was considered traitorous till one son of a Finnish sitting President decided he world not join the army. A dilemma but it gave relief to some who were not the zombies of Finland.

The country has been run by a cartel system. There is no maximum retail price law. The Finns are fleeced. The Oligarchy convinced the Finnish Public that just because they paid highest prices, they had the “Highest Standard of Living”. Whereas the Finns just had the “Highest Cost of Living”.

As a result Finns have been the top “Economic Migrants” to every corner of the globe, starting with their neighbour Sweden.

On the other hand Finns do not tolerate migration into Finland, except when it serves their purpose as allowing prostitutes from third world countries to enter freely!

Even the word for migrant - immigrant or emigrant, was demonized in Finland!

Every country has its good and bad points and so to Finland. Finland is a good country to live in, but certainly not the BEST! The grass always appears greener on the other side of the fence. The Newsweek team should live in Finland for a short while and then they will realise the error of their conclusions.

To calm our nerves we again went to enjoy the great autumn sunset.

Contemplation forced us to send this comment to the Editors of Readers Digest and also post a similar comment on one of their country editions (Australia).

As current residents in Finland, we (authors of "Handbook for Survival in Finland) disagree with ranking of Finland as No. 1.

It is far from reality.

It is a great country viewed from outside.

It polishes its image like an apple.

Peel the skin.

You see a core filled with worms.

Paul Wolfowitz's, the creator of a beautiful Green Zone in Baghdad, World Bank as a source - a laughable idea!

Was there any consideration of the ghastly smell that covers many cities in Finland from the pulp production chimney stacks. One professor could not even stay a full day in Oulu as he would break out with a rash!

And here is a totally ridiculous statement:

To get greener, countries must do more to capitalize on national strengths. Finland, among the world's largest exporters of wind-power technology, produces less than 1 percent of its own electricity via wind power, despite average coastal wind speeds of 15 mph, 50 percent stronger than those in Chicago.


Finland has one major wind-power technology producer making 1 - 3 MW units and it is owned by an Indian company!

A look at the cities rankings shows only one Finnish city, Helsinki ranked at No. 21, and we would not like to live in Helsinki. Having lived in three other ranked cities, London (27) Chennai (65) and Mumbai (70), none of them could be ranked even close to another city where Jacob lived, Delhi and New Delhi, which is not even in the rankings!

This is a true case of "the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence".

How we wish the authors had stepped across that fence to check their facts with some ground level investigation!

As they say, a little knowledge is dangerous.

It is sad as this article will be quoted a million times around the world for a publicity hungry small country as Finland. The myth will be propagated while the truth is left far far behind!

Finland best for living?

In a Readers Digest report just released titled Study says Finland best for living and which was covered by Reuters, caused Annikki and me to think about our combined life in India, Finland, Sweden, Germany and England over the last 60+ years.



This evening, we went to the Nallikari beach for Annikki to collect stones. (I just walk around doing some photography with my lousy camera) and help her carry the collection to the car!




The yellow, gold and red autumn leaves were strewn all around, truly beautiful.




The autumn sunset was glorious. It felt as if we were lifting off into space!

Looking at these photographs of today and the peacefulness that surrounded us on this beautiful autumn evening, maybe you and we can agree with what has been claimed in the report!

HELSINKI (Reuters) - The Nordic countries are the world's greenest and, despite the cold winters, Finland is the best country to live in, according to a Reader's Digest study released on Friday.

Finland was followed by Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Austria.

"Finland wins high marks for air and water quality, a low incidence of infant disease and how well it protects citizens from water pollution and natural disasters," the study said.


My having lived here for the last 23+ years (of course, Annikki was born here and lived the first 18 years of her life here) makes it difficult for us to either agree or disagree with even this specific conclusion.

Annikki said that when we came to Finland there were several reports saying how unhealthy the tap water was in Finland as it was over-chlorinated. In her opinion, things have not improved since then.

She queries the validity of this report as the source of the data is not known to us. If it came from Government sources, then both of us agree that it is a load of bull!

Finns are great at creating a golden image like a beautiful polished apple, but remove the skin and we will find many worms gnawing away inside.

Many environmental activists also may not agree with this study done by U.S. environmental economist Matthew Kahn, who looked at issues such as quality of drinking water and greenhouse gas emissions as well as factors such as education (totally stereotyped) and income (low after high taxes without corresponding benefits).

When we look at education in Finland, there is nothing even coming close to the level of "education" provided by my alma maters, Bishop Cotton School (Bangalore), which had 7 playing fields for its student in its town centre campus, Cathedral and John Connon School (Mumbai) and St. Stephen's College (Delhi).

Incomes are certainly not high. Retained income is low. Savings are virtually non-existent.

But people feel they are rich because of the easy accessibility to long term low interest loans that enable them to enjoy their "own" homes and new cars and other material benefits!

But that is certainly not a reflection of the income standard in Finland.

Certainly, I do not drink anything but tap water. Annikki and many others tend to buy bottled water. Many go to bore well taps located around the city to collect their drinking water as they do not think the tap water is healthy.

My philosophy has always been that tap water contains all the germs and bacteria that our bodies require to build resistance to the local environment. Avoiding that diminishes our natural resistance.

It used to be said that India had the greatest advantage with regard to germ warfare as all the Indian Government had to do was export water from Calcutta!

My health over the last 23 years compared to most others I know in Finland proves my point of view. I have had no major or even minor illness during that time and never lost a day of work during my working life.

Mathew Kahn obviously did not meet the many thousands of Finns who suffer terrible allergies to dust, pollen, cat fur, dogs and many edible items as nuts, milk, etc. etc. Our grandson, Samuel, is a typical example - allergic to tens of things!

This is a direct consequence of a bad environment and living practices, so this would contradict his conclusions.



Finland is a great place to live if you follow the rules we have laid out in the book "Handbook For Survival in Finland" written by Annikki and me which was published in 1994.

But for others - life can be very very difficult on all fronts.
