Our journey to India

We left Oulu only by 1 pm on Friday afternoon as there were so many loose ends to tie up. It snowed heavily most of the 600km. I was glad I had got the winter tyres on and the drive was uneventful. Couple of stops for Mika to smoke his cigarrettes..

We stayed at one of Raantel's apartments in Helsinki. Although we have had it for a month we have not had any residents in it. Annikki, Mika and I were the first to stay there. It was not yet ready, so our friends, Ganesan and Levi, must have had have a tough task on Sunday making it ready for the two Indian software engineers who were to arrive on Sunday.

On Saturday I met with Christian, had lunch with him at the FORUM while Annikki and her sister, Anneli went to church. Then we went to Sello, the huge shopping complex in Leppavaara. It is just too big to be convenient. We found nothing we wanted there. There was no service in either PRISMA of the K-Citymarket, which were both so huge that all the Prisma's and Citymarkets in Oulu would fit into these! Later I had time to visit Ajith and discuss a possible visit to his Ayurvedic Rest Centre on the Kabini River on the border of Karnataka and Kerala.

We had to leave at 5:30 am for the airport so I ordered an Airport Taxi, leaving the car parked outside our apartment for Levi to park at one of other apartments. the Taxi came right on time and for € 32, we had a convenient ride to the airport. Certainly a service to be recommended.

Despite my telling Annikki, she insisted on taking some tubes of hand cream etc., which were larger than the allowed size. Sure enough she had to give them up quite unwillingly at the security. All the soft drinks and juices Annikki had saved for the air journey had to be thrown away! (Hope she has learnt the lesson!)

The Finnair flight to London was not very comfortable as the space between the seats was so small. We certainly hoped for larger seats and more leg room on the British airways flight from London to Mumbai.

London Airport is HUGE. We had to take a bus from Terminal 2 where we arrived to Terminal 5, where the international and domestic British Airways flights depart. The coach journey was 10 minutes.

We had to go through another security before entering Terminal 5. Really terrible. Just because I left my watch on, I had to encounter a full public body search.

We wondered what benefit all this was as a determined terrorist would know HOW to beat this security process. We were amazed to see a little 10 year old girl having to undergo a body search! A complete sham.

The departure gate for our flight needed yet another journey in a fast train from one part of Terminal 5 to another. There we waited for our flight which was a another full one. To our dismay the seats were narrower than the last flight and the leg room between the seats was even tighter.

Luckily the in-flight TV had some great British and American comedy programmes and a couple of drama TV presentations, plus we were served two meals and time went fast -the eight hours flew away and we were in Mumbai. Annikki enjoyed herself watching the flight path on the TV all the way from London to Mumbai! To each his / her own.

It was 20 past midnight on 19th October 2009 when we disembarked. More on that in my next blog posting.

Serial postings!!

It is indeed a surprise to put up a series of blog postings in just a couple of days!.

From Joanna returns to Newcastle

Events however dictated such action as Joanna and the grandkids left for Newcastle early today. Annikki bade farewell at Vesaisentie.

I accompanied them to the airport.

From Joanna returns to Newcastle

Ani was dropped off by her parents as she went with Joanna to help out with the kids. She has become part of Joanna's family. Ani has finished her high school, and was doing nothing important till graduation day at the end of May, this was a nice chance for Joanna to get some help as all the children and Joanna really love her. Ani will also accompany the family to India in July / August of this year.

Yesterday was also a strange day in Oulu - weather-wise! (Am I using this word wrongly?)

We had bright sunshine, then cloudy skies, a fierce wind, followed by a snow blizzard, and then tiny hailstones followed by a brilliant sunny evening. The temperature fluctuated between -5 C (-15 C when the wind was blowing) to + 20 C. One does not know whether we are having winter, spring or summer!!

Chinese fast Food in Oulu

(Also posted on Oulu Best Buy Blog.)

There are literally dozens of Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai Restaurants in Oulu serving very nearly the same food and of approximately the same quality. Noodle House was an exception, but due to a paucity of demand for Chinese noodle preparations, it closed down.

What has sprung up in its place is something quite unique. (AWing Restaurant, Kauppurienkatu 5, 90100 Oulu; Tel: 08 333839<; Mobile: 044 544 0880; Managing Director: BILLY LU.)

The Chef is a Master Cook. His dream is to start a school for Chinese cooking in Oulu. Seeing his talents and verstaility, plus a quiet dynamism, he will succeed.,

Billy Lu's Fast Food Restaurant (AWing) was featured in the latest Kaleva Peto Edition. When he called me on Thursday morning; I told him about it. He was thrilled. He now has it proudly displayed in his small and neat restaurant.

When I first walked into his restaurant, I was not captured by his menu or his food, but the beautiful nature of the the owner. He wanted to talk, and he did. I soon discovered much about this young man. I knew I could try a few of his preparations.

On the next visit I asked him to make me a super hot chicken noodle. Boy, it was good. He then prepared a series of dishes for some of the German residents in India House. The sweet and sour chicken with noodle was exceptionally good.

One Saturday evening I visiited the restaurant to be served a special health soup he cooks for himself. It was truly invigorating.

Billy Lu will go far.

If you want anything special, and he has a huge repertoire of dishes at his command, please call Billy Lu at 044 544 0880. And if you want it spiced - just tell him that you want it as spiced as "JACOB". You will not be disappointed!

Family arrive in Oulu

On Monday, I had a dentist's appointment. Helena Piippo is an exceptionally good dentist. She is so careful that her customers feel no pain.

I had already warned her that I could fall off to sleep at the drop of a hat.

She experienced that when she was working on a difficult tooth. She suddenly found I was fast asleep on her dentist's chair. She did not disturb me till she finished her job. She was in amazement as how I had slept through the series of manoeuvres she had done to fill a rather large cavity!

Late on Monday night, Joanna with her brood, Samuel (12), Daniel (almost 5) and Maria (1+), safely arrived in Oulu. Annikki had dinner for them and they ate after a long and tedious journey from Newcastle.

The grandkids are looking exceptionlly well and all of them were happy to land in their own home in Oulu. Maria is like a little doll which is full of energy! Annikki and I are so happy to be able to be with them, even though it is only for 2 weeks.

The Moon was parked in their garden when they arrived. Annikki had been at work!

Early Tuesday, Samu and I went to the airport to find a book he had lost. The book of 370 pages had been left by him somewhere after he landed in Oulu Airport. He had read 340 pages on his flight and was desperate to finish it! Sadly there was no sign of it either in the Info desk or the Blue 1 counter. Later, I checked the Finnair Lost Property Section, and it was also not there.

More about their stay as the days roll on.

Oulu - India Crazy Love Express?

2008 Crazy Days were here again.

I drove up to Stockman on my scooter on the opening day of the Crazy Days, Wednesday 2nd April, and found four little Indian boys who had been standing at the head of the queue.

They were waiting to get the tokens so that they could buy their cheap Finnair tickets to Delhi / Mumbai, € 395 from Helsinki (€ 465 from Oulu).

I arrived a little after 7 am. I had carried a small bag of biscuits for this tired set of guys who had been standing there from 5 am.

Reason for this show of enthusiasm - though not said, I believe that they were on their way to India to meet up with prospective brides.

Market value must be high as they are in a foreign land!

However, I know that some of these boys are not interested in the monetary aspects of marriage but want to find a suitable partner, preferably an engineer.

Best of luck guys!!!

Wonder why none of the single Indian girls here in Oulu were not en route on this gravy train?

O-India Pongal / Shankaranti Celebration in Oulu

Pongal / Shankaranti Celebration in Oulu

There could not have been a more auspicious celebration to launch the activities of the O-India Group representing the concerns and interests of Indians resident in North Finland (Oulu, Raahe, Kajaani and Rovaniemi).

The season in mid-January represents, amongst many things, the ascendancy of the sun, the abatement of the north-east monsoon and the harvesting season in many parts of India. It is celebrated under different names by all communities in all corners of India.

An event was organised by the local Indian population at the Oulu Kolutuskeskus on Asemakatu where everyone brought a small amount of their home prepared Indian vegetarian food.

The early arrivals waited expectantly for the proceedings to begin.

The evening started with an Introduction by Kiran Kumar Nataraj, one of the founders of the O-India Group.

Then to the melodic voice of Sulochana, four Indian ladies performed the traditional welcome Arathi Pooja.

This was followed by a short talk by Nageshwari who told the audience of the national meaning of this period of the year.

The whole audience were then divided into four groups representing four of the great rivers of India. It was then time for some fun games while the audience enjoyed chips and soft drinks.

Dumb Charades organised by Shalaka and Ashwini was a great fun, and the audience proved to be very experienced at this game.

This was followed by another popular game organised by Kiran, of identifying the songs associated Indian movie clips. It was interesting to see how this young audience was so clued up of hits before they were even born!

The last (luckily for me) game organised by Nisha and Sunil was more active in that blindfolded audience members had to pin thetail on the elephant.

The game which was abandoned due to lack of time was supposed to be make a fun scapegoat out of me!!!! The Good Lord was on my side vis-á-vis the mischievous Mallu couple! :-)

The games were followed by a scrumptious dinner with Srini providing the base with Tamarind Rice and Hot Pongal (prepared in the attached kitchen). A special thanks to Pizzeria Göreme who provided us with the large cooking vessel. The dinner had preparations from all parts of India, as egetable Curry, Dry Spicey Potato, Kheer, Sweet Pongal, plenty of delicious ice cream and lots of Mango phool! The food vanished but there was plenty for all.

(Nagendra replaces Bala as the camerman
in the second shot.)

And after all the O-Indians left the organising team could sit back and relax for a few minutes.

Already calls are coming in for more such events. And we are sure that will be many such events in the coming years as the people who are running the O-India Group are YOU, and all of you are enthusiastic and energetic youngsters.
